In the eminent, but divided Jewish world there are not many bodies that are able to be a factor in unifying the entire Jewish nation. One of these few bodies is the Israel Defense Force, which is engaged in the holy work of using the required strength to actualize the national independence of the Jewish nation.
Full military service obligates youth to take off at least three years of their lives, at the most intense and adventurous period, in order to serve the nation. This is a very real sacrifice. In extreme circumstances, it is speaking of a willingness to sacrifice life. Yet, the soldiers all sacrifice the start of their academic studies, their ability to make a living, and the possibilities for enjoyment in this world for the good of the State of Israel.
This fact, in and by itself, obligates every one of us to give all that we are able to show public support and encouragement of their service, and to express our gratitude to the soldiers that are serving the Jewish nation. Like all giving, it is not only a matter of a gift for the receiver but, it is also a gift for the giver. He will strengthen his connection with the national expression of the Jewish people, and he will return good for good to those who are willing to make this sacrifice for our sake.
Therefore, I too join this blessed initiative of sending care packages to soldiers, whether it be to express to them our deep thanks, be it in order to strengthen their hands and to encourage them to volunteer, or be it to connect the Jewish nation entirely around one of the bodies that most unifies us.
